Open source portal consolidation

Janus Boye has the story on the eXo chaps melding their product with JBoss here:
eXo Portal and JBoss portal join forces, with his usual insightful commentary, so I won't report it or his points here.

Well I did not see that one coming !

It will be interesting to see if the outcome of this is a product where the whole thing is greater than the sum of its parts.

Janus mentions that the new product will only really be in competition with Liferay and uPortal in the open source portal space, but does anyone outside of education use UPortal ? I know commercial organizations that use Liferay, but not uPortal.

If you want some information on who is using what kind of portal or web CMS platform, check out this article on the Prescient site: Intranet 2.0 becomes mainstream

Its an excerpt from Prescient's Global Intranet 2.0 survey, in which over 560 organizations took part, the article includes details on how to get a copy of the report.

Off topic post - NHL Stanley Cup finals and Don Cheery

OK, so I am British, and live in Toronto, therefore I 'follow' and 'support' the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL, and the Mississauga St. Micheals Majors in the OHL. However, because his uncle likes the Penguins, so does my six year old son, so once again the Stanley Cup finals are fraught for us, as the Penguins and Redwings take it down to the last game.... exciting stuff.

Really, though my off topic post is more about Mr Don Cherry, if your a Canadian or U.S. hockey fan he probably needs no introduction, if your not, then see his entry on wikipedia.

What I would just like to comment on is the respect he shows for the Canadian armed forces, and principally their casualties and war dead. On every Hockey Night In Canada on prime time CBC, during his Coaches Corner spot, he will pay his respects and talk about the latest young Canadian to die in service. As someone who spent 10 years in the Royal Navy and then 6 more years in the British Army as a reservist, and who has luckily only lost one colleague in Iraq (although my ex-unit lost another in Afghanistan, but I did not know her), I love the fact that Don speaks of, and for these people. Really you would never ever see a TV personality on prime time saturday night TV in the UK getting all choked up talking about these young men he has never met. And its not for show either, this guy is genuine. See the video for last nights (game 6) Coaches Corner here at CBC and watch it to the end, then read the comments below.

Afghanistan is not a 'popular' war in Canada, but the people of Canada get behind their armed forces and show solidarity and support, something the citizens of my country of birth could think about doing !

Anyway, enough of this bizzare of topic post - props, kudos and a 'bravo zulu' to Don Cherry, all round good egg and snappy dresser as they would say in the RN.

And Go Penguins ! our fingers and toes are all crossed for the final game......

A new wave in collaboration and communication

So I go off line for 3.5 days to move house and what happens, Google Wave gets announced and demo'd, thats all.... :-)

Wow, is about the best way of describing my initial thought. I don't want to go all gushy and Google Fanboi, but this could be game changing, paradigm shifting etc...

Why ? Well because of their pledge to open source large chunks of the code, and because its a platform and a set of protocols not a product. As stated in the demo they actually want a developer community to grow and help build extensions. As also noted you could download the code and build your own Wave servers for use inside the enterprise firewall.

This is where it gets interesting for me, enterprise use of this platform. I can see all sorts of possibilities based on the video of the demo. I am sure it will not take long for someone to build a Wave to CMIS connection using the open standards and API's, so you could use this browser based communication and collaboration suite with your industrial strength FileNet, Documentum or LiveLink ECM repository, cooool

I will start with pointing you to a link to a Google blog post describing Wave:
"Went walk about. Brought back Google Wave."

This is the most interesting dissection of what it Wave could mean for me, its Dion Hinchcliffe's assessment of what Wave: "The enteprise implications of Google Wave."

I am going to provide a list of other links, to individuals who discuss it as SharePoint killer (don't think its a fair comparison), as OneNote on steroids (don't think so !) to those who worry about the possible implications of its use.

Personally, having only been consulting with blue chip companies for just over a year, I actually been been surprised how conservative big business can be, and I am not sure how many of the biggest companies that could make best use of this platform would actually be able to do so.

I also think that Wave integrated with an appliance based vesion of Google Voice to run inside the corporate firewall would be truly 'awesome' as they say on this side of the Atlantic :-)

So, take a gander at some of these and make up your own minds !
